Common signs include cracking, splitting, loss of adhesion, hardening, missing sections, staining, drafts, and leakage. Some failures are visible only from close access.
Reliable replacement normally requires removal of failed material and proper preparation of the joint faces. Applying over deteriorated sealant can conceal rather than correct the failure.
Representative adhesion tests and mock-ups are often useful. A consultant may also specify laboratory compatibility review, field pull tests, water testing, or other quality-control measures.
